Move More, Sit Less
I was getting dressed when my husband complimented me on my back. I was honestly surprised because I don’t really pay attention to my back; who really does? I replied, “Thank you!” Then I asked, “What about it?” He said, “I can see your definition.” It was nice to hear, considering my back wasn’t even the area I was focused on! I was focusing on keeping my arms toned. Instead of sitting at my desk for long periods, I get up and move. I walk around the building and do desk push-ups. Yes, you can do exercises right at your desk, which I strongly recommend. You will be surprised at how much small moves matter. The desk push-up is simple and requires no gym equipment. Refer to the diagram that shows exactly how I do them. It can help you incorporate more upper-body and core-strengthening movement into your day while also breaking up periods of sitting. And that's really the point. We are all busy, so don't try to wait for the perfect time to exercise. You don't necessarily need an hour-long workout every day to start creating better movement habits. Start where you are, move your body, and be consistent. Those small efforts can add up over time. My unexpected back compliment reminded me that consistency matters, even when that area was not the main focus. So, the next time you're working at your desk, take a movement break. Try a few desk push-ups, walk around for a couple of minutes, stretch, take the stairs when you can. Find small opportunities to move. Because sometimes the changes you're working toward aren't the only changes you or others may notice. Your body may surprise you. At some point, I will share other desk exercises that I do. As with any exercise, use proper form and choose movements appropriate for your fitness level.
