Two C's To Help Lose Weight

August is another chance to get it right. If you didn't reach your goals last month, don't quit; change a few things. Did you know that 80–90% of weight loss is determined by what you put in your mouth? You don't have to starve yourself, but you do have to make healthier choices more often. Years ago, my coworkers would joke about how I eat like a bird. For breakfast, I would snack on things like carrots, celery, and nuts. At lunch, we worked across the street from a hot bar with all kinds of food. I filled my plate with sautéed squash, zucchini, and broccoli, along with a big salad, while everyone else loaded up on fried foods and heavy sides. Don't get me wrong, I love a good pizza, but things like that are eaten in moderation. Years later, those same people asked me how I maintained my weight. The answer wasn't a secret; it was based on two C's: 1. Choice. 2. Consistency. Everything I put on my plate was a choice. I didn't force myself to eat those foods; I genuinely loved them and ate them consistently. What can you do? Start by evaluating what you eat and drink. Processed foods high in sodium and sugar can work against your goals, while whole, "living" foods help nourish your body and keep you feeling satisfied. Find healthy foods you enjoy and make them part of your daily routine. I'm not saying you have to give up the foods you love, but cutting back can make a big difference, especially if you have high blood pressure or diabetes. Your health is built one meal at a time. Remember: Change is hard, but poor health is harder. Make one healthy choice today. Your future self will thank you.
